The Cloud JRS-34 Active Ribbon Microphone was named in memory of Jon R. Sank (1934-1998), and designed by his son Stephen. The story begins in the 1930′s at RCA* with Harry Olson developing the 44 and 77 series ribbon microphones. Mr. Olson was followed in his post by Jon R. Sank. He was charged with improving on Olson’s best mics. He did just that with the BK-11, a direct descendant of the 44 series. Before Jon Sank died in 1998, he passed more than 50 years of technology and skill to his son. Trained by his father beginning at age 10, Stephen’s studies continued to build upon lessons learned from the original RCA Laboratory Studies.
Today Stephen and his wife Cynthia continue the family tradition of developing quality hand crafted ribbon microphones. All Cloud products are fabricated and assembled completely in the USA, mostly in Tucson, AZ. Each ribbon is cut, corrugated, and installed by hand in precisely the same manner originally prescribed by Olson.
The Cloud JRS-34, with modern appointments such as Cinemag transformers, neodymium magnets, and a phantom powered active circuit, takes the next evolutionary step in the immortal BK-11 and 44 series microphone design line.

The unique metal screen is not simply perforated but louvered at a slight angle to redirect ultra-low frequency breath blasts which are pushed past the side of the screen. This process does not attenuate high frequencies, as fabric screens do, and leaves the vocal performance unaffected but without annoying low frequency “pops”.
