Before you “go electric” and spend your money let me offer you a couple of tips…
1) The first question you should ask yourself is:
“Why do I want to learn electric guitar?”
If the answer is because electric guitars are simpler to learn than acoustic guitars, you might want to reconsider that. Why? Because playing electric guitar requires all the technique you need to play an acoustic guitar PLUS the ability to be in command of all the different sounds that an electric instrument can produce.
So, if you are shopping around, my first tip is to buy a basic model.
2) Don’t spend a fortune!
Nowadays, you can get a nice electric guitar for just $200-400.
If you have absolutely no experience, ask a friend who has been playing for several years. Don’t have one? Go to gigs. Find a guitarist whose music you enjoy and, right after the gig, ask her if she could help you select the perfect electric guitar for your needs. You can offer to buy her lunch in return! Doing so, you’ll also make a new friend whom you can always go back to when you need more advice…
3) Buy a nice amp also
Guitar amplifiers are available in many sizes. As beginner, you’ll want just a small amp (20-30 watts) that you can utilize for your every day practice sessions. Don’t buy those very small amps. They sound terrible. Invest in a good amplifier that you can use for years.
4) Don’t be in a rush to buy!
Spend some time trying both guitars and amps before making your choice. You might want to go to a few shops before making a decision. Most stores allow their customers to test their gear. Bring a note pad with you and take note of what you liked and what you didn’t like in the instruments you tried. When you have a few options under your eyes, go back to the store where you found the instruments you loved the most and buy them. Also, remember to purchase an amplifier that already has a distortion box, especially if you are into rock or heavy metal.
And finally, when buying your guitar and amplifier, don’t be afraid to ask the shop assistant to give you a handful of picks for free. And, why not, ask for an extra set of strings too…
5) Make sure you know how you are going to learn to play your new guitar…
Sounds obvious right? wrong! I have seen way too many times people spending hundreds in a beautiful electric guitar and then getting frustrated for non making progress. What does this unavoidably lead to? giving up! that means your new guitar is going to sit in a corner of your living room and accumulate dust for the next few years…
Bottom line is:
6) Find a good teacher
How about the guitarist who helped you choose your gear? Does he teach? Does he know how to teach?
Or else, if there is any music school in town, you can be sure they’ll have some guitar courses.
First of all, you must decide what style interests you more. Who is your favorite guitarist/band?
This will assist you immensely to select the right guitar teacher for you.
Careful though, guitar lessons can be very costly! A skilled teacher will ask you between 20 and $50/hour.
On the other hand, if you check the internet, you’ll find literally TONS of on-line guitar instructionprograms. Most online guitar schools offer free lessons that you can grab to get you started. Spend some time trying out different methods and, after you find the guitar teacher you want, make your final decision.
Anyway… I hope you found these tips useful…Once more, start small and invest in your skills rather than spending lots in a flashy guitar.

 Guitar Method is no cheesy slice-and-dicer or muscle-toning contraption, but a very cool, innovative instructional system for beginning guitarists. It has so many features, in fact, that even seasoned guitarists might learn something new about their instrument. We’ll admit to being a little skeptical about Guitar Method after seeing an infomercial for the instruction software on late-night TV–the uncertain realm of those strange devices that someone, somewhere must buy. And with none other than ’70s heartthrob himself, Peter Frampton, pitching the product, we were rather amused. But Frampton is a great guitarist, and although he certainly never used computer software to help him learn to jam back in the day, he apparently knows what he’s talking about when it comes to guitar-instruction technology on PCs. The heart of Guitar Method is the Fretronome and the song library. The Fretronome is an illustrated layout of a guitar’s fretboard–its six strings and the frets behind which you place your fingers. The view is as if you were looking down at your own fingers on the neck (the view can be adjusted to suit left-handed players). Circled numbers on the strings indicate the chord patterns and associated fingers, and the chords change as the chosen song from the song library is played. The song library contains about 75 songs, from standards like “Greensleeves” and “Amazing Grace” to pop classics like “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door” and “La Bamba.” Just below the Fretronome is the notation for the song. You can choose either tablature or standard music notation. After you’ve selected a song, just click the play icon and select the tempo comfortable for you. As the song progresses, you’ll see the chord fingerings change on the Fretronome, and the current notes and chords in the notation are highlighted in red. You can change the tempo, pause at any time, or skip around in the song to work on select parts. Double-click in the notation to bring up that section on the Fretronome. If you wish, you can follow the 60 lessons provided, learning at your own pace. Its all very intuitive, thorough, and easy to use. Is your axe slightly out of tune? Bring up the tuner from the menu bar and tune up. Want to learn or practice specific chords by themselves? From the menu bar, simply click to launch the Chord Dictionary, an illustrated view of dozens of chords from A Major to G#7 with a suspended 4th. Use the Metronome to practice playing in tempo. Practice specific techniques like syncopation, muting, and how to hold a pick. There wasn’t much to not like about Guitar Method. If you’re looking for a way to learn to play, pick this CD-ROM up. You can take our advice, or take it from rock legend/late night television pitchman Peter Frampton. Guitar Method is truly an original, impressive instruction package.
