![]() This is the story of a teacher education initiative. The project A Community of Inquiry in Teacher Education (CITE) has aimed to transform learning to teach from an experience based on the acquisition of skills to one centred on the cultivation of certain dispositions. CITE creates a program structure for integrating elements of university-based courses and school practicum experiences, with community based activities, and it utilizes a variety of instructional strategies and technology-based tools to create a series of ‘knowledge building communities’. As small-scale reform initiatives go (36 aspiring teachers each year) CITE has had a long and vibrant life, despite some inevitable struggles. It is the longevity of CITE that prompted the authors to turn their inquiries about teaching and learning to the challenges of sustaining their own project. The result is a collection that chronicles some of their own experiments, deliberations, and the lessons learned through their many experiences. It is more accurate to say that Collective Improvisation is many stories, not just one. That is because this book represents the perspectives of university-based instructors, school partners, former students, and graduate student researchers, each of whom contribute a different and valued voice to the whole composition. |

There are many methods claiming to teach guitarists how to improvise jazz guitar by providing endless scale charts, arpeggios for practice, and technical exercises aimed at learning notes by rote.
Back in the 1940′s, the guitarist Charlie Christian devised a system for easily improvising over complex chord changes. His ideas revolutionized electric guitar playing, and the art of improvisation once and for all. Every guitarist since his time owes him a debt of gratitude.
In this guitar method, learn how to apply the concepts Charlie Christian used in order to open up your view of the guitar neck. You will find that you can improvise over any chord progression with just a little practice.
This method breaks down some of the most compelling jazz/swing guitar solos every played into understandable bites, and keeps everything grounded in solid, simple theory to be sure that the reader can apply the concepts and create new ideas in this style. Naturally, many of the melodic fragments used in the accompanying solos have become classics of the Jazz repertoire, first adopted by jazz greats Barney Kessel, Joe Pass, and Jim Hall, as well as blues legends T-Bone Walker and B.B. King (among many others). Learning these concepts is like going back to the well of ideas and drinking from the coolness yourself, instead of simply copying a handful of licks and recycling them…

Dave explains his approach to jazz improvisation with musical examples that he himself uses, learned from years of playing with the greats – after learning how to play jazz from listening to players such as Grant Green, Wes Montgomery and Pat Martino. Explains the minor sub approach using minor scales to play over dominant seventh chords, and then includes several solos over often-played jazz standards, using this approach. Also described are the use of the blues and pentatonic scales as well as be-bop ideas, the melodic minor scale, and whole-tone and diminished scales and patterns. Hanon-type warm up exercises and Dave’s own fingerings shown in tab are also described. Perfect for intermediate-to-more advanced players, Dave’s concise way of explaining his approach will open up the students to developing their own improvisational ideas. Dave plays the examples and solos on the companion CD including tracks with a rhythm only section for student play-along.
